Frequently Asked Questions On The Test That Has Been Tried and Tested


An IELTS test consists of four modules. All candidates are required to take the same Listening and Speaking sections. There is a choice of Reading and Writing Modules depending on whether you wish to take the Academic or General Training. The test follows in the pattern of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, where each section is individually timed. The IELTS results are scored on a band scale of 9

IELTS has two types of modules - Academic and General Training. Academic Module is required to be given by students who plan to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels. While, General Training Module is generally a prerequisite for the people who either want to pursue vocational studies or plan to migrate.

How many sections does the Listening test have?
There are four sections on the Listening test. Each section has 10 questions with a total of 40 questions overall

Where can I write my final answers for Listening?
During the Listening test, you may write your answers onto the question paper as you listen, once the audio stops, you are given 10 minutes to transfer those answers onto your answer sheet at the end of the test.

Will I hear different accents on the test?
Yes, but they will be clear and easy to understand

How important in spellings on the Listening section?
It is important that you spell the words correctly when you write them down

How is the test marked?
The test is marked on a band scale of 0-9, where each score corresponds with the type of user from non user to expert user.

What kind of topics can I expect in the Reading section?
The Academic Reading topics are of general interest and are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. In contrast, the General Reading, texts are taken from advertisements, notices, newspapers and timetables.

How can I improve my scores on the Reading test?
In order to improve your scores on this section, familiarize yourself with the type of questions you will have to answer on the test

What kind of graphs or diagrams can I expect for Task 1?
The type of graphs may vary, you can expect anything right from pie charts, bar graphs, or a table to explaining the diagram of a process or a sequence of events

Can I take a neutral stand in Writing Task 2?
Yes, you may as long as you provide supportive reasons for the same. Ensure that you do not contradict yourself, maintain the same position all through your essay.

What is the purpose of the Speaking test?
The Speaking test is designed to judge you on how well you justify your opinions using appropriate language, your fluency and coherence.

Is each part on the Speaking test marked separately?
No, the examiner marks you according to how well you perform across all three parts of the test.

Things to Remember on Test Day


  • Ensure that you arrive early at the Testing centre
  • The Listening Test is the first section that you will be tested on, followed by Reading and Writing. Speaking takes place on a different day
  • You must write your answers in pencil on both the Listening and Reading sections. You may use a pen or a pencil for the Writing test
  • Unlike the Listening test, the Reading section has no transfer time and will require you to mark your answers directly onto the answer sheet
