Ways To Get Maximum Funding

Education funding can be a concern for some students, however, don't let this keep you from having one of the most memorable experiences of your life. Every year the admissions committee offers several scholarship grants to students from different backgrounds. Some of these are merit based scholarships, while others are awarded based on non-academic activities. Studying abroad does not have to be expensive, there are several ways on how you can get maximum funding for an overseas education.

Apply Early

Some universities may require you to submit scores for standardized tests, therefore it is best that you apply at the earliest as these test scores can be a deciding factor for winning scholarships. Staying on top of your deadlines and applying early on gives you more scholarships to choose from, thereby increasing your chances of getting a scholarship.

Apply To A Variety Of Scholarships

One way of getting maximum funding for a study abroad program is by applying to several scholarships at a time. Scholarships are awarded to students on the basis of their academic achievement, hobby or extracurricular activities. Applying to these different types of scholarships will increase your chances of winning atleast one of them.

Ways To Get Maximum Funding

Follow Instructions Carefully

When applying for a scholarship, read the instructions carefully and provide information that is needed. If you are required to submit all your relevant documents before a certain time period, ensure that you do so.

Personal Statement

Your personal statement is an opportunity for you to stand out from other potential candidates. It is a vital part of your application process and requires you to be honest and truthful while writing it.

Letters Of Recommendation

Admission officers want to know the type of person you are, and recommendation letters provide insight on just that. A compelling recommendation goes a long way and will provide you with maximum funding.

Ways To Get Maximum Funding

Extra Curricular Activities

Active participation in extracurricular activities or volunteer work puts you at an advantage with the admissions office; it shows how easily you can adapt to any given situation.

Review Your Application

Before you submit your application, check to see that you have answered every question, an incomplete application could cost you a scholarship. Moreover, it is recommended that you set aside some time to check for any spelling errors you may have made. Remember an error free application increases your chances of a scholarship.

Writing a Personal Statement for Studying Abroad

If you're planning on a study abroad program at an undergraduate or post graduate level, you will be required to write a statement of purpose. Personal statements are one of the most crucial parts of your study abroad application; it demonstrates your ability to effectively write and communicate in English and plays a significant role in the admissions decision making process.
When writing your personal statement, it is extremely important that you do not include anything that isn't true, rather discuss what is important to you and the ambitions that you have. Remember this is your chance to stand out from the other applicants.
Every admissions office will have certain instructions when it comes to writing one, however, before you begin, it is important to note what these instructions are.
Mentioned below are some important points to keep in mind when drafting an essay.
  • Take Your Time.
  • When writing your personal statement, ensure that you take your time. Create a draft of what you wish to include, this will help you organize your thoughts. Rushing the process can lead to errors, your best ideas will come to you with time.
  • Paragraphs.
  • While writing, be sure to structure your paragraphs. Writing your personal statement in paragraph form makes it more readable. The strategy here is to have a powerful introduction so the reviewers take notice. The admissions committee want to hear your story and this is your chance to make it a compelling one. Your goal here is to make yourself memorable.
  • Focus On Your Strengths.
  • When drafting your statement of purpose, focus on your strengths. In addition to writing about your passions, you can also discuss how past experiences have helped you grow into the person you are today. Be sure to also include why you should be accepted and what you will bring to the program. Your positive attitude will be highly regarded by the university admissions.
  • Mention What You've Done Outside The Classroom.
  • Write about any extracurricular activities you may have actively been involved in. For eg, be sure to include any volunteer work or work experience in your statement. This shows how relevant your experiences are to the ambitions you now have.
  • Plagiarism- Don't do it.
  • Your personal statement should contain your own work, this means you should not under any circumstances copy material from other sources. Passing off someone else's work as your own is plagiarism and your application can get rejected.
  • Proof Read.
  • It is very important that you set aside time to proof read your essay before you submit it. This way you can check for any grammatical errors you may have made while writing. You can also have your friends and family read it, they will be able to provide you with some valuable feedback.

Why You Should Consider New Zealand As Your Study Destination

Whether you take up hiking or haka, you'll be sure to fall in love with the clean, green feel of student life in New Zealand.

New Zealand is a heaven for wildlife and adventure lovers, and also offers plenty for fun-loving city dwellers. This highly developed country remains rooted in the natural world, mixing cosmopolitanism with conservationism, and in an active yet easy-going society.

Recent years have seen New Zealand attract a growing number of students from around the world. There are now more than 110,000 international students in the country, and national agency Education New Zealand aims to increase this by more than 40,000 by 2025.

Those with a taste for outdoor adventure will certainly find plenty to explore. New Zealand is famed for its natural beauty and diverse landscapes, from lush green forests and lakes, to rocky roads, expensive beaches and awe-inspiring mountains. And what it lacks in human population, it more than makes up for in terms of varied and interesting wildlife.

The nation's culture is equally distinctive, strongly influenced both by its native Maori population and by its modern-day multicultural make-up. As well as having remarkably low crime rates, New Zealand ranks among the world's most peaceful nations, coming fourth in the Global Peace Index 2015.

Higher Education in New Zealand

With a strong emphasis on research and personal development, New Zealand offers a prospering higher education system. Tertiary qualifications run from certificate to doctorate level, progressing through diploma, bachelor's and master's programs along the way. Typically, a bachelors's degree will take three or four years to complete and a master's degree one or two years, while a PhD program can take upto two to four years. The option of a fast-track master's degree, which takes less than one calendar year to complete, is growing in availability and popularity.

As well as a selection of public and private universities, New Zealand also offers around 600 private training schools, for specialized foundation and diploma qualifications. Other options include studying at a ' Wananga' – Maori-led tertiary institutions unique to New Zealand- or at one of the 18 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs), which offer vocational degrees and diplomas.

The highest- ranked university in New Zealand in the QS World University Rankings 2015/16 is the University of Auckland, at 82nd in the world. Further seven New Zealand universities feature, with the University of Otago, University of Canterbury and Victoria University of Wellington all ranked among the world's top 300.

Applications & Visas

The process of applying to Study in New Zealand varies, with specific guidelines provided by each university. In most cases, you can submit your application online, but some institutions require hard copies of documents to be sent by post.

Generally, you will be asked to submit relevant academic documentation, providing proof of qualifications completed. While qualifications and credit transfers are widely accepted form New Zealand, Australian and UK institutions, some international qualifications must be assessed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

If you are not a native English speaker, you will be asked to provide proof of proficiency in English, by either submitting language test results (e.g. TOEFL or IELTS),or demonstrating that you've studied in English previously.

Student visas are required for all full-time students from outside of New Zealand or Australia who wish to study in the country for longer than three months. Part-time students should apply for a visitor visa. In order to apply for your Student Visa, you must submit the official application form (online or on paper) to Immigration New Zealand (INZ), along with proof of acceptance to an NZQA- approved university, a valid passport, proof of medical and travel insurance, evidence of sufficient funds to cover living costs (see below), a police certificate, a medical check (for certain students only) and a return flight ticket (or proof or sufficient funds for this).

Recent reforms to visa requirements have now made it easier for international students to work and pursue a master's by research or a PhD, students are also granted unlimited work rights. Others can work up to 20 hours per week during term-time, and full-time during official holidays, as long as their course meet certain criteria. Qualifying courses include programs lasting at least two years; approved tertiary exchanges of at least one year; qualifications which could lead to an application for a Skilled Migrant Visa; and certain full-time English language courses.

Post-Graduation Careers

If you wish to stay in New Zealand after graduation to seek work, you'll need to apply for a post-study work visa. This visa allows you to stay in the country for up to one year while searching for a job, with eligibility to apply for an additional visa of two to three years once you are hired.

You must apply for the visa within three months of completing your studies, or within six months for PhD graduates. To qualify, you'll need to have completed a qualification that meets the country's skilled migrant criteria.

Unemployment levels have fallen in recent years, reported at 5.8% in 2015. Areas in which skilled graduates are in immediate high demand include accountancy, construction, engineering, dentistry, oil and gas. There is also long-term demand anticipated for a range of medical professionals, veterinarians, ICT professionals, environmental research scientists, spatial scientists and statisticians.
