How to Choose the Right Country and Program When Applying For a Degree Abroad

A semester abroad comes with several added benefits; an opportunity to take in the culture of a new country, while exploring your surroundings. Your time abroad will make you resilient and self-dependent, this is your chance to embrace the experiences that come your way and make the most out of your time overseas. When applying for a study abroad program, the following factors need to be considered:

Blog on Overseas Education- Study Tips

  • Geographic region and location

Students often face a dilemma when choosing a country to pursue their education in. While the decision of choosing a location can be overwhelming for some, it is important to find a location that caters to your interests. Candidates that have a strong desire to learn a new language often choose to pursue their degree in a country where English is not the first language, others choose a country based on the climatic conditions of that region. When choosing your destination, be certain before making a definite decision.

  • Length of study

Perhaps one of the most important questions that you need to ask yourself is, how long do I wish to study abroad for? There are a range of program lengths available overseas, choosing one that meets your requirements and fits into your budget are factors that need to be considered when applying for an education abroad.

  • Finding your program

With an array of course programs available across several universities, it is understandable why students have a tough time deciding on a program. Choose a program that is suitable with your academic and career goals, and that subsequently augments your existing skill set.

  • Communicate with family and friends

Having an open and honest conversation with your family about your study plans will help put things in perspective for the both of you. Furthermore, speaking with friends or family that have previously studied abroad can provide you with insight on the financial aspect of an overseas education. You will learn to set aside a budget for your everyday living expenses and other miscellaneous costs.

Checklist to Keep in Mind While Rushing Into Study Abroad Application Submission

While you’re waiting for the summer to pass and for term-time to roll on up, however, you may want to follow study abroad checklist to make sure you’re as prepared as you can be for your trip. Whether you’re planning to study abroad for a month, a semester, an entire academic year or a full degree, it’s vital that you think about the important, bureaucratic things like travel insurance that will help make your time abroad run as smoothly as possible. So, you’ve been accepted onto a program at a foreign university of your choice, and are preparing to set off into the distance via plane/boat/train/parental vehicle to start your new international student life.

Blog on Study Abroad Application Submission

  • Travel insurance

It might just look like an unnecessary cost, but, in reality, travel insurance is essential. For a small, one-off payment, travel insurance will cover you if anything happens to you during your studies – be this illness, injury or theft – and will make sure you don’t spend your entire life savings on a trip to the doctor’s! In many countries, health insurance is also a requirement for international students, and you may be asked to prove you have sufficient cover.

  • Financial evidence

When applying for your student visa or further financial assistance, you’ll likely have to prove your current financial circumstances (i.e. you’ll have to prove that you have the funds to finance part or all of your study). The same may be asked of your parents if they will be supporting you. Usually, you can request these statements from your bank, or you can just print them yourself from home through online banking.

Also, if you pay a fee of any kind, like when applying for your student visa, you’ll likely be sent a receipt or confirmation. Ensure you have a copy of this as it proves you have done this, as well as the date this was processed. At the very least, use your own records of this financial transaction from your bank, building society or PayPal account which shows this transfer. This way, if you don’t receive what you are meant to, you have evidence.

  • Medical

To make sure you’re fighting fit before leaving home, it’s wise to visit your doctor for a full medical check-up and to make sure you’ve had all the vaccinations you may need for your chosen study destination. For far-off countries, these vaccinations will come at a price, but rest assured your doctor will tell you if they are completely necessary. If you need any assistance while you’re away, make sure your doctor sends a copy of your medical records abroad. Foreign prescriptions are not always honoured so it is advised that you allow yourself extra time to collect your prescription before your medication runs out.

  • Academic Scripts

Throughout your schooling, you should keep safe all academic scripts and results with grades, in chronological order. If these are not in English, they should be translated alongside the translator’s accreditation – this way admissions staff can judge whether you have the necessary grades to study there, and compare these to their own grading system. It is also worth keeping certificates for extra-curricular achievements as well.

  • Student Visa

Depending on your chosen country of study you will likely have to procure a student visa in order to be allowed in the country for the full length of study. Often, if applying for an undergraduate degree at an accredited university, the school will assist with the student visa process. This is not always the case however, so make sure to ask. If no help is offered, get straight onto the job of securing your student visa yourself. To do this you will need to contact the embassy or consulate of your country of study and may need to attend an appointment as part of your student visa application. Here you’ll be asked to bring documentation such as a university letter of approval, the aforementioned valid passport, proof of funds, and, occasionally, a return ticket for your journey home at the end your studies.

  • Passport

Of course you’re not going to forget your passport. But what you may need to ensure in the run-up to your study abroad program is whether your passport will remain valid for the duration of your travels. Processing times vary from country to country but can often take six weeks or more. If you wait until you’re abroad before renewing your passport, you’ll have to face embassy visits, queuing and even more form-filling than usual – the last things you want when in an exciting new country! Many countries, in visa applications and such, will require you to have at least six months extra on your passport beyond the end of your studies, so make sure you allow for your study time, any additional travelling time, plus an additional six months. If you do need to renew your passport, make sure you apply as soon as possible to avoid being without a passport come start of term.

  • Re-Check

Once you have all the right documents, re-check it as many times as you want. This will take you one step closer to your dream university. Have attested copies of all the documents in a folder and arrange it according to the check list. This will help you organize your application better. It might seem like you have all the documents necessary, but never be too confident. Plan ahead of time and prepare all the documents a couple of months before the application process starts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Scholarships & Study Grants

Students that hesitate to study abroad do so because of the cost of an overseas education. However, one of the most efficient ways of securing funding for a program is by planning for it well in advance. scholarship is a monetary award that can help reduce the cost of a student's education, these deadlines close early as compared to other course related programs, so ensure that you do not miss out on them.

  • What are the types of scholarships available?

There are several types of scholarships that you can apply to based on the qualifications that you hold. Some of these are merit based and are awarded for academic achievements, artistic abilities or other distinctive personality traits and interests. There are others that are awarded to candidates based on their financial need.

  • What are my chances of gaining a scholarship?

Scholarships are competitive, with several students trying to get maximum funding for an education abroad. To improve your chances of a scholarship, it is important that you clearly express your ambitions and goals to the admissions office, whilst showing them that you have what it takes to achieve great things.

  • When can I apply for these scholarships?

Scholarship deadlines vary depending on the university and scholarship that you've applied to. Consulting with your advisor will help you stay on top of these deadlines and will keep you from losing out on scholarships that are appropriate for you.

Questions About Scholarships

  • What are the eligibility criteria for these scholarships?

Some scholarships are targeted towards students who come from a specific region or given to those who have enrolled in a particular course program. Others come with specific guidelines, and seek proficiency in standardized testing.

  • What should I submit with my scholarship application?

Along with your application, you will also be required to submit other documents. Some of these may include transcripts of your grades, recommendation letters and personal essays. Submissions of these supporting documents are an integral part of your scholarship application.

  • What are scholarship scams and how do I avoid them?

Scholarships do not cost money, so if you are asked to pay when applying to one, be wary. Always ensure that you go over the terms of a scholarship and do not give out any financial information. If you wish to seek validation on a scholarship, it is advisable that you consult with your educational advisor for guidance on the same.

7 Quick and Handy Tips to Make Cultural Adjustment Easier While Studying Abroad

Studying Abroad comes with some responsibility on the student's part. As you will be living and functioning within another culture, it is important that you keep in mind the local cultural norms. This might influence the way you dress, the way you speak, and the way you interact with the locals. It is important for travelers to practice sensitivity throughout their journeys, as your behaviour may otherwise offend others unnecessarily or bring a bad name upon all travelers.

Here are Some of The Tips to Make Cultural Adjustments Easier:-

  • Your Experience :-

Reflection on time spent abroad is one of the most important elements in making the experience worthwhile. It is possible to spend months abroad without breaking out gaining intercultural competence. Think about your goals before you go and spend time each week writing privately, talking with a new friend, or documenting in creative ways what you’ve been experiencing.

  • Engage Yourself :-

Saying so, the more you are on the internet, the less you are part of the local community. The more your thoughts are with people and events back home, the less you will understand the nuances of your immediate environment. So, it is advisable to spend time with the locals to feel at home.

  • Cultivate Humility :-

Listening to what people have to say, and assuming that there are logical reasons why people do things the way they do, can go a long way towards creating positive relationships across cultures. Being willing to concede that your way of operating in the world is just one of many valid ways can make your encounters with different ideas and people.

Quick and Handy Tips to Make Cultural Adjustment Easier While Studying Abroad

  • Embrace Opportunity :-

Street music, local team sports, family visits, religious services, fish markets, political rallies, and impromptu dance parties are all potentially fascinating experiences, but ones you will certainly miss by not actively participating in your community abroad.

  • Don't Be Judgemental :-

One of the characteristics of moving from one culture to another is irritation with what appears to be the absurdities of local practice. Keeping an open mind is one of the best strategies for a productive and enjoyable time abroad. Of course, these are not absurdities, but cultural differences – to be observed, examined, understood, and ultimately even appreciated.

  • Be a Good Observer :-

It can be extremely useful to write down a brief account of interactions or behaviours you find puzzling and then ask someone local for help in decoding what you’ve seen, as it can spark really enlightening conversations.Done in the context of journal writing, it can also form a record that you can revisit in the future when the details of your experience are beginning to blur. Cultivating the habit of observing the ordinary is surely one of the most useful ways to affect our own behaviour when abroad and recognize how much we take for granted in our own local and national culture.

  • Adjustments :-

As you develop a routine abroad and accomplish the goals you set out for yourself, see if you recognize yourself in one or more of the common phases of cultural adjustment. Students encounter a wide range of adjustment processes abroad. You might cycle through these phases at different times, not necessarily in linear fashion. If you have no feelings of discomfort whatsoever, you might consider whether you are actually making an effort to interact with people in your new environment.

5 Mistakes Indians Make While Applying For Overseas Education

More and more Indians are opting for study abroad these days as it has better prospects and greater number of opportunities considering the future of the candidate. Choosing a country to study in and a program are the most crucial decisions the candidate has to take care of in order to avoid problems.

Here Are Some Tips To Help You Avoid The Most Common Mistakes While Applying for Study Abroad.

  • Inadequate Research :-

Students are in so much hurry to go abroad that often they ignore a lot of basic but crucial information related to the program they are applying for or the university or institution they would choose. Always prepare a set of questions pertaining to your areas of interests. Gather as much information as possible of the program you are applying for by asking these sample questions.
  • Is this the right program for me?
  • Does this program have as much value it has in the host country as in any other country?
  • What different contents are there for the same program in different institutions or universities?

5 Mistakes Indians Make While Applying For Overseas Education

  • Feeble Financial Planning :-

This is one of the most important factors to be given serious attention to. In a way, it is the soul of your whole study abroad dream. Feeble financial planning definitely leads severe reverberations down the line.
Accumulate all the information related to student loans, tuition fees and other expenses. This will help you to sort out a number of insipient issues in advance. Good money management skills will help you in saving extra money and ease the pressure. It will also help you in finding a suitable part time work, which will supplement your finances.

  • Incomplete Application Form :-

More than 70% of the applications are rejected because a student has failed to attach all the necessary documents with the application form. Make sure that you've filled all the necessary information in the form and also double check all the required documents that need to be sent with the application form. Prepare a check list to help you with this process. Ensure that all the documents and paperwork is in the format as expected by the institution/school. Don't forget to include your test scores and application fee.

  • Wrong College Name in the SOP :-

It has been widely observed that many students write an SOP and change the name of the college for different applications. You should always prepare a separate SOP for each institution you are planning to apply to and also make sure that the correct name appears in the essay wherever it is required. It will not look good at all if the admissions manager finds a different name of college in the application essay.
Get your essays proofread by atleast 3-4 people before think about sending it to the institution. Rereading and rechecking can help you to avoid such a silly mistake.

  • Fabricating Credentials on the Application :-

Most of the students are aware of the fact that falsifying qualification on the application is a serious offence, but still there are some who tend to falsify their grades in the application to get admitted to the desired university. Fudging ones information while filing an application to study abroad should be avoided at all costs as it can ruin any reliable credibility the applicant may have, and possibly bar them from studying in a foreign country.
